What is traditional marketing and why is it so important?

Society today has become accustomed with our digital world and the same applies in the marketing sector. We’ve become familiar with a whole host of digital tactics and have ensured they are a key focus when pulling together strategies – with good reason too. But as a result, are we starting to neglect traditional marketing, and does it still hold a valuable place in our modern world?

What is traditional marketing?

Traditional marketing is any form of marketing that targets audiences by using offline materials. To ensure that these materials reach the desired audience, they’re placed where they’re most likely to be seen. For example, radio, billboards, TV etc.

  • Print – this can be any kind of advertisement placed in a printed format such as newspapers, magazines, brochures, flyers etc.
  • Product placement – companies will pay to have their products prominently featured within a movie, TV show or on the radio.
  • Outdoor – simply put, outdoor marketing is when a business places advertisement in locations that will reach consumers outside of their home such as billboards, posters, vehicle livery etc.
  • Direct mail – this type of marketing will be delivered physically to prospective customers doors through a delivery service – this includes the likes of flyers, catalogues, brochures etc.
  • Telemarketing – this involves contacting consumers via the phone in order to try and sell a product and/or service.

Why is traditional marketing still important?

Now that we’ve established what traditional marketing is and some of the main tools, it’s time for the important question – why does it still play a vital role in our modern marketing world? We’ve identified three key reasons below:

  3. Another reason why traditional marketing shouldn’t be forgotten is its ability to reach audiences that you wouldn’t have access to, through a digitally focused approach. This allows companies to have a much more diverse audience – which is particularly beneficial for small businesses in helping them to grow.
